The Plan to Reduce Wrinkles & Sun Damage

by on March 9, 2009

Reducing wrinkles, age spots and sun damage is something that we all desperately want. The following plan is made with the overview of giving your skin a whole new and better look by providing mild, potent and protective ingredients that have the ability to help improve wrinkled skin. If you give your skin such useful products everyday, it will make it look better, enhance collagen production, and help to produce normal skin, which implies a significant reduction in wrinkles.

Mind you, I did not say that it will completely get rid of your wrinkles. Unfortunately, you cannot find any product or blend of products (no matter the cost) that has the ability to get rid of wrinkles completely. The wrinkles that you worry so much about are those are there because of damage from the sun over a long period of time, and the weakening of the normal structure of the skin, a process that cannot be avoided. It does not matter the person who is selling a particular skin care product, or what they say about it, it cannot produce the same results as that which will be achieved through the operation of a plastic surgeon or cosmetic surgeon. The following elaborate plan provides the basis needed to rejuvenate the skin and function in the best way.

Get an effective sunscreen product

Get an excellent sun screen which is made to provide more than a sun-protection. The most important thing to do to protect your skin from wrinkles is to daily apply a potent a sunscreen which is constituted of the best ingredients and has a rating of SPF 15 or higher. If you apply a sunscreen daily (whether through your moisturizer of formulation), it will go a long way to prevent new wrinkles and reduce the rate at which old lines deepen each year. If you ignore this basic principle and put your faith in anti aging claims (these do not need to be proven if sunscreens are not involved) you are openly calling for more winkles, skin coloration and even the deadly cancer.

Basically, you should look for a product with a rating of SPF 15 or higher. You should also make sure it contains one of the following ingredients, to ensure that you are well protected from UVA skin. Natural sunscreens also have their advantages. Read more on natural sunscreens here.

Outside the United States, Mexoryl SX and Tinosorb are effective UVA-protecting ingredients. Apart from that it is very important to look for a sunscreen which contain large amounts of antioxidants, anti-irritants, cell –communicating ingredients and ingredients which have similar structure and functions as a healthy skin. There is a great deal of scientific research that proves that antioxidants not only enhances the effectiveness of sunscreens, but also reduces free radicals in order to prevent sun damage and skin inflammation caused by exposure to the sun.

A good sunscreen contains potent UVA-protecting ingredients in addition to antioxidants and other ingredients to improve the appearance of the skin. In a nutshell, if you want to derive the maximum benefit and healing, then you should go in for a sunscreen that doesn’t only deflect ultraviolet rays, but also works on a cellular level to prevent damage. Retin-A, Renova, Avita (drug name tretinoin) and Tazorac (drug name tazarotene), which are prescribed by doctors or dermatologists, are some of the best topical prescription products to improve the appearance of skin that is damaged by the sun (i.e., wrinkled or discolored).

Tretinion

Tretinion has the capacity to restore defective cell production into its normal state. You may consider it the guru of cell-communicating ingredients. Most of the time, this leads to an enhancement in the collagen production in the skin, making the skin smoother and decreasing the depth and appearance of wrinkles; The actions of Tazarotene are known to be similar to tretinion (Sources: Cutis, February 2005, pages 10-13; Mechanisms of Ageing and Development, July 2004, pages 465-473; and Dermatologic Surgery, June 2004, pages 864-866).

Shedding Light on Aging Skin

An important effect of sun damage is that it thickens and discolors the skin and makes it rough and uneven. The best thing to do in order to get rid of dead unhealthy skin that has accumulated abnormally is to use a well-formulated alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) product. Apart from evening out the skin tone it will also give the skin a significantly better texture. Getting rid of accumulated layers of dead skin cells makes it easier for other products, especially moisturizers, to penetrate the skin and improve in effectiveness. The form of AHAs that has received the most attention in terms of research, are glycolic or lactic acids. The only option for BHA is salicylic acid. For AHAs, watch out for products with at least 5% AHA, but preferably 8-10%. If the percentage isn’t listed on the label, then the ingredients should be on the list of ingredients. BHA products also have 0.5% to 2% concentrations.

The difference in concentrations between AHAS and BHA do not make them qualitatively different. Their higher concentrations do not make AHAS more effective or better than BHA. Rather, leave-on, daily-use AHAs are effective at 5% to 10% and BHA at 1% to 2%. (Sources: Women’s Health in Primary Care, July 2003, pages 333-339; Journal of Dermatological Treatment, April 2004, pages 88-93; Dermatology, January 1999; pages 50-53; and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, April 1997, pages 589-593). In many cases in skin care (and baking for that matter) percentage of an ingredient does not necessarily indicate its superiority.

If you are struggling with persistent blemishes or blackheads, it is better to go for BHA because it contains salicylic acid, which can also improve the shape of the pore. Anyone you choose, it is important that your AHA or BHA product has a pH between 3 and 4. It is important for either of these ingredients to be within this range to be able to exfoliate skin. You can find products that have lower pH than 3, but these are not of much benefit because they tend to be too irritating for all skin types. (In rating skin care products containing AHA or BHA, I always test the pH to make sure that it really has the ability to exfoliate skin) (Sources: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, April 2005, pages 1156-1162; Dermatologic Surgery, February 2005, pages 149-154; and Experimental Dermatology, December 2003, pages 57-63.)

Hydroquinone-based, skin-lightening products.

A skin-lightening product is needed where there are discolorations induced by the sun or by hormones. Find one with a texture of your choice (cream, lotion, gel), and which contains 1% OR 2% hydroquinone. There is a large amount of research that proves that this ingredient is safe and effective in inhibiting melanin production in order to improve the appearance of brown discolorations. You can also find Hydroquinone in higher concentrations by prescription (an example would be TriLuma, which combines 4% hydroquinone with tretinoin and a corticosteroid). You may also be interested in using skin-lightening product that also contains glycolic or salicylic acid the results can be enhanced by these exfoliations.

Hydroquinone has been known, for the longest time, to be to be safe, but these have received minimal attention in terms of research and the results are poor compared to that of hydroquinone. Ironically, these alternative ingredients are derivatives of hydroquinone. They include mitracarpus scaber extract, Uva Ursi (bearberry) extract, which contains arbutin, and forms of arbutin.

Others, which have abilities to lighten the skin and have been researched into to some extent are kojic acid, licorice extract, azelaic acid, and stabilized vitamin C. for a greater number of these hydroquinone alternatives what has been found out is the quantity that can produce the desired effect. These alternatives may perform below expectation, if they are looked at in the light of the enormous amount of research concerning what hydroquinone does to the human skin. (Sources: International Journal of Dermatology, August 2004, pages 604-607; Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, July-August 2004, pages 377-381; Facial and Plastic Surgery, February 2004, pages 3-9; Dermatologic Surgery, March 2004, pages 385-388; Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering, March 2005, pages 272-276; and Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, February 2003, pages 1201-1207.) Interestingly, hydroquinone is not only a hero for those with sun- or hormone-induced discolorations but its components have potent antioxidant abilities (Source: Journal of Natural Products, November 2002, pages 1,605-1,611).

Mild skin cleansers and products

Be gentle! Bear in mind that mild cleansers and products without any ingredients play a significant role in giving your skin a better appearance. Gentle, water soluble cleansers give a greater reduction in skin irritation, prevent loss, and do not leave behind any residue that makes the skin dull. A cleaner cannot remove a wrinkle but is you cleanse gently and reduce irritation and inflammation it enhances the healing process that are the effects of products such as sunscreens and tretinoin.

A good moisturizer with proper composition (serum or liquid textures for skins that are normal to oily or susceptible to blemish) can significantly improve the structure of the skin, make it more radiant and make its surface smoother and suppler surface. A gel, cream, serum or lotion with abundant antioxidants, ingredients that behave in a similar way to the skin, cell-communicating ingredients, and anti-irritants can produce new collagen, create normal skin cells, and make them less dangerous. Ensure that the beneficial ingredients in the package are kept stable after opening the product. For that reason opaque tubes or bottles with pump applicators should be used, and clear packaging and jars of any kind should be avoided.

Most cosmetic companies are very much aware of the fact that consumers desire to control aging and reduce wrinkles, and it is therefore common to come across products, in all retail centres, that claim to have the ability to lift, firm and tone the skin while decreasing (or significantly reducing) wrinkles through the action of the ingredient or complex for this week. Don’t be deceived by it, especially when it costs so high and amount, instead of using an effective sunscreen or considering the above options which have been proven to be effective in making a sun-damaged (wrinkled) skin look better. Almost without exception, if an anti-wrinkle claim sounds too good to be true, it probably is. You may give it a try, though, but it surely is not the fountain of youthfulness that we all earnestly desire.
