Turkey necks – What are they

Turkey necks are okay on turkeys, but not really on humans. A turkey neck, often known as a wattle or drooping/sagging chin, makes men and women appear more aged than they are, fills out their profile and gives the effect of a weak chin or jaw line. A turkey neck can also emphasize the existence of jowls, or sagging skin along the jaw line, adding years to the physical appearance. A few easy physical exercises done on a daily basis can help get rid of the dreaded turkey neck.

The Causes

The neck is more prone to wrinkles due to the fact the skin on the neck is slimmer than on the face. Along with the aging process, the fat around the throat is lost and wrinkles appear. When fat on the neck is lost, a “turkey neck” can appear. The first wrinkles to occur are horizontal, not vertical.

Turkey-neck occurs for the following reasons:

Loss of tone and aging in the platysma muscle. This is a thin sheet of muscle that covers the throat, which keeps the skin tightly drawn into the jaw.

The depressor lip muscles atrophy and shrink, distorting the platysma muscle so that it is pulled away from the throat. The skin loses elasticity and sags below the flaccid throat muscle.

Neck wrinkles can also come from:

Sleeping wrinkles
Being overweight
Poor diet

The Truth Behind Neck Wrinkles

Simply put, wrinkles are triggered by three things: loss of elasticity, decrease of new skin cells and deficiency of moisture. How to get rid of turkey neck lines and neck wrinkles

Every pose includes this hideous looking flabby neck, the proverbial turkey neck. Sags, bags, and tags create hags, and I don’t want to be one. The idea of aging, I’m okay with, but it is the effects of aging that bother most of us.

Chewing gum

For years, I was told eating gum assisted in toning the face, and it does, but very, very little, and it primarily works on the jaw line. A more nicely toned jaw line may or may not help a turkey neck. But, better than nothing I say: chew away.

Facial yoga

Facial muscles, including the turkey neck, can benefit from resistance training. These isometric techniques are simple, and with consistency, over time, a new firmer jaw line will develop and the turkey will fly the coup.

The following preventative exercises will help to offset your potential risk of turkey-neck by toning the platysma and depressor muscles.

(1) Turn your head to one side, open your mouth, and scoop the lower lip over the top lip. Hold for three seconds , relax, then repeat five times each side.

(2) Repeat the above exercise but this time look forwards and tilt the head back slightly. At the same  time curl the tip of your tongue, pressing it against the roof of your mouth. Hold for three seconds , relax, then repeat five times.

(3) Repeat exercise (2) but don’ t push your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Instead smile while scooping your lower lip over top teeth.
