Effectiveness of topical ascorbic and Vitamin C+E+ Ferulic Acid

There is reliable scientific evidence to show that vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is an effective topical agent to remove ripples and raise fine lines in skin. But unfortunately vitamin C solution when exposed to air becomes not only ineffective & also potentially harmful (because of oxidation) but may also increase formation of free radicals in the skin in actual usage. Effective methods to stabilize vitamin C in water solution have not been yet discovered.

But here is a possible method to do so by adding vitamin E and ferulic acid to vitamin C.

Vitamin E is a fat soluble anti oxidant. It has been noticed that vitamins C & E can regenerate each other and strengthen each others’ anti oxidant effects. Though vitamin E can protect vitamin C from oxidation in a water solution in a limited way yet when vitam E and C are co-applied to the skin the anti oxidant effects of vitamin C are enhanced further. It may also the noted that vitamin E does not check stimulation in collagen produced by vitamin C in any way.

Ferulic Acid: It is a powerful antioxidant and a natural phenolic compound found in plant cell walls. Research studies have indicated that ferulic acid improves stability of vitamin C in water solution and its addition with vitamins C and E Protects U-V induced skin damage even upto 200%. Combination of vitamins C & with ferulic acid does have clear advantage over vitamin C alone a but one should not forgets its limitations. First of all in this combination some degradation may occur due to usage and storage conductions. Secondly the acidic properties of vitamin C may be irritating for people having sensitive skin. However there are alternates to minimize skin irritation and to get Benefits of stable topical vitamin C.

SKINCEUTICALS CORPORATION has patented the topical combination (Vitamin C 15%+Vitamin E 1% + ferulic Acid 0.5%) as a commercial product. The expiry date of this product should be checked and it should be stored in tightly closed regrigerator. One can easily make vitamin C + E+ ferulic acid formulation easily but in view of patent law it should not be sold in markets.
