Collagen creams have been in existence for many decades. One is likely to believe that they are effective products because they contain collagen which is the substance that the skin needs for improvement. It does not actually work that way. Just look at the following analogy. You live in a brick house, and somebody throws bricks at your wall. What effect will this have on your wall? It will surely not make it stronger just because they are bricks, but will just fall down and lie on the ground.

A similar thing happens when a collagen cream is applied to the skin. Collagen is a bulky molecule which cannot enter the skin but just remain at the surface of it, and will likely be washed off with a shower. These collagen creams are actually not completely worthless. At least they can serve as moisturizers because of the water holding ability of collagen. They can however not be effective in strengthening your skin.

There are some few new techniques that are aimed are creating a better collagen cream. Some companies have introduced a partially hydrolyzed collagen. This involves breaking down the collagen into smaller fragment which are absorbable through the skin. The problem with this technology is that although the collagen fragments may be small enough to penetrate the skin, they cannot effectively be integrated into the skin’s collagen framework due to their smaller sizes. They will be easily washed out of the skin through lymphatic flow. There are also a few companies that present products that are supposed to deliver full sized collagen deep into the skin through a topical application. This is a fantastic claim but is not yet supported by any substantial evidence. Even if this claim is true, successful transdermal delivery of full-size collagen may not be able to integrate well into the skin matrix to make them substantially stronger and more regular.
