What happens to your skin as you get older?

At age 25, we begin to see a sign of aging in the skin as the natural regenerative process begins to slow down. The skin begins to get thinner after age 45, and this occurs partly as a result of changes in body hormones.

No one likes an aging skin or a sun damaged skin. The skin’s appearance and characteristics are altered as one grows older. At age 25, we begin to see a sign of aging in the skin as the natural regenerative process begins to slow down. At this stage the rate at which the skin replaces worn out cells reduces, resulting in a slower turnover of the surface skin and slower wound healing. The skin begins to get thinner after age 45, and this occurs partly as a result of changes in body hormones.

This further weakens the skin and exposes it to greater damage by abrasion and makes it more sensitive to irritating environmental factors and allergens and we begin wondering how to prevent wrinkles. The skin becomes weaker and less elastic as the collagen and elastin coils suffer cuts and cross linking damage. The amount of moisture holding proteoglycans and GAGs reduces, and this makes the skin dryer and looser. The skin loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. The number of blood vessels in your skin decreases, making the skin less youthful and colourful.

Other factors causing skin aging

Apart from the above changes that take place in the skin gravity is also another factor that affects the skin by pulling at it and causing it to sag. Wrinkles around the eyes are an indication that the skin is damaged. The process of healing of the skin is quite slow, and minor blemishes are developed in the process. The aging process can even be aggravated by some other conditions such as extreme cold or heat, excessive sun (UV radiation), psychological stress, and improper nutrition. When we compare skin in areas exposed to the sun to areas that are usually protected from the sun, we can see the effect of the damage that can be caused to the skin by sunlight. Mottled pigmentations can be observed on the exposed skin whiles covered skin is appears clearer and paler.

During the time of aging the oil producing glands become weaker and the skin begins to dry up. At this stage exhibits a higher response to use of chemicals such as disinfectants and harsh soaps, which can now have a greater damaging effect on the skin. Our skins are naturally covered with a substance known as sebum, which is produced by glands in the skin. Removal of the skin oil by the continuous use of soap and other drying agents leads to drying of the skin which in turn cause cracking and flaking. The occurrence of cracking exposes the skin to inflammation and itching. Activities that lead to skin drying in or daily lives are: the use of harsh soaps, long hot baths or showers and excessive skin cleansing, which is very common in the modern society.

Development of Common Skin Lesions

Apart from the fact that the skin loosens and sags during aging, there is also an increased occurrence of skin growth lesions which may range from harmless “seborrheic warts”, “liver spots” or “age spots” to skin cancers which is very critical.

Age Spots

Other names for age spots are liver spots, lentigo simplex and senile lentigines. They are flat, gray, brown or black spots. More than 90% of fair skinned people experience this condition after age 50. Age spots range from freckle-size to a few inches in diameter. They can mostly be seen skin areas that are exposed directly to sunlight. Age spots may look like cancerous growth although they are actually not cancerous and do not need to apply any treatments to it. They can, however, be made lighter or removed by the use of skin bleaching products.  They can also be slowly removed by hydroxy acids and strong copper peptides.
